Carpet Bubbles: A Trip Hazard You Shouldn’t Ignore

Published 31 March 2026 · By Carpet Now

Most people notice carpet bubbles for months before doing anything about them. They seem minor — just an aesthetic problem. But loose, bubbling carpet is a genuine trip hazard that causes real injuries every year, particularly for elderly family members and young children.

Why Carpet Develops Bubbles

Carpet is installed by being stretched over gripper rods fixed along the walls. Over time, the tension releases — through humidity changes, heavy furniture being moved, heavy foot traffic, or simply age. Once the carpet lifts from the gripper rods, it has nowhere to go but up — creating bubbles and ripples across the room.

Queensland’s climate accelerates this process. Humidity causes carpet fibres to expand, weakening their grip on the underlay and gripper rods. Carpets that were installed correctly can still develop bubbles within five to ten years in high-humidity environments.

The Real Risk

A carpet bubble doesn’t need to be large to cause a fall. Even a small rise of 20–30mm is enough to catch a foot during normal walking. Children running and elderly residents with balance issues are particularly at risk.

From a liability perspective for landlords and commercial property owners, loose carpet is a documented safety hazard. If a tenant or visitor trips on bubbling carpet that the owner knew about and didn’t fix, that constitutes negligence.

When Do Carpet Bubbles Become Urgent?

Address it urgently if any of these apply:

  • The bubble is in a high-traffic area (hallway, living room)
  • There are elderly or mobility-impaired people in the home
  • The carpet has fully lifted from the gripper rods
  • The bubble is large enough to be felt underfoot

The Fix: Professional Carpet Re-stretching

Carpet re-stretching is the only permanent fix for carpet bubbles. A professional power stretcher pulls the carpet back to proper tension across the full width of the room and re-secures it to the gripper rods. Most standard rooms can be re-stretched in an hour or two.

DIY attempts using a knee-kicker rarely provide a lasting fix — the forces involved in stretching wall-to-wall carpet correctly are far beyond what a knee-kicker can generate. Poorly re-stretched carpet typically develops bubbles again within months. Learn more about our carpet re-stretching service.
