Carpet Repair vs Replacement: Making the Right Call
Published 31 March 2026 · By Carpet Now
Damaged carpet forces a decision: fix it, or start fresh? Both options have merit — it depends on the type of damage, the age of the carpet, and the cost difference. As carpet specialists who do both, here’s our honest take.
When Repair Makes More Sense
Repair is almost always the right call when one or more of these apply:
- The carpet is in good overall condition — still has life left
- The damage is localised: a burn mark, a torn seam, a patch of pet damage
- The carpet can be matched for patching
- Re-stretching can fix the main issue (bubbles, ripples)
- You're in a rental property and need to meet bond requirements
When Replacement Makes More Sense
Sometimes replacement is the wiser investment:
- The carpet is old (10+ years) and worn throughout
- The damage is extensive — multiple areas, whole room affected
- The carpet has a strong odour that won't lift
- The carpet is hygienically compromised (severe pet urine saturation)
- You're renovating and want a fresh start anyway
The Cost Comparison
Targeted repairs (burns, small patches, seam fixes): $80–$250. Re-stretching a room: $150–$350. Full carpet replacement per room: $400–$1,200+ depending on carpet choice.
In most cases, if the repair cost is less than 30–40% of replacement cost AND the carpet has several years of life left, repair is the better investment. View our carpet repair services.
What About Rental Properties?
For rental properties, repair almost always makes more financial sense than replacement. Bond requirements don’t require new carpet — just carpet that’s in reasonable condition. Targeted repairs for burns, stains, and pet damage typically cost a fraction of full replacement. Read our bond return carpet repairs guide.
